When Madonna Asked “Are We in Gay Heaven?” She Already Knew the Answer

I know not many good things happen in a nightclub past midnight… But gay history happened this week in Amsterdam, on August 1st, at 2:30 in the morning. Madonna was thirty minutes into her Club Confessions set at WorldPride when she does the thing nobody quite believed would ever actually happen. She brings out Kylie Minogue and Madonna turned to the crowd, and asked if they were in gay heaven. Here’s the thing nobody outside gay culture fully clocks about that question. It wasn’t a joke. For a generation of older gay men (including me…) devotion to Kylie or to Madonna was never really about the music, not entirely. It was how a lot of us got through childhood before they had the language, or the safety, to be who they were.
