There is no story in the modern celebrity world that moves more people than the deteriorated relationship between Princes William and Harry. Every woman around the world sat and watched them forced to publicly grieve their mother and walk behind her coffin in 1997. That moment resonated so deeply because it touched our most primal human fear: the idea of leaving this world when our children are still unformed, alone in a cruel and complicated world, with no mother to protect them. Harry was just 12 years old. He recalled feeling entirely "numb" during that long, agonizing march. In his memoir Spare, he wrote that he kept a fraction of William in the corner of his eye at all times, drawing his strength from knowing his brother was right there walking the same path, while he kept his own gaze fixed on the ground.

We watched as the two of them grew up supporting each other side by side, smiling at each other, sharing private jokes. We felt reassured and comforted by this relationship, the sense that each boy was looking after the other. That is precisely why its deterioration hits so hard. This week I spoke to several people close to both brothers to assess where things stand, nearly three years after the last time they are known to have exchanged more than a handful of words, and whether there is any road back.

Harry doesn't have his brother's phone number. At this stage, sources close to the Duke of Sussex confirm, even if he did, William wouldn't pick up. The man who was once one half of the most famous sibling act in the world is waiting for a call that may never come, and the silence has now stretched to nearly three years.

Two people intimately connected to Harry tell Celebrity Intelligence that the estrangement cuts deeper than anyone on the outside realizes. "He sees William blossoming and he secretly had hoped that William would have more of a struggle and need him," one says. "He's been waiting for the call. That would be his dream come true. He regrets leaving."

The last time the brothers exchanged more than a few words was at the Queen's funeral in September 2022. Since then, when Harry and Meghan reached out after Kate's cancer diagnosis, the message went unreciprocated. Multiple royal insiders describe William as "done with drama" and confirm the firewall is firmly in place. Behind the scenes, though, a quiet diplomatic effort is under way, palace aides are meeting, a Games in Birmingham is being planned as a public olive branch, and a newly appointed royal official has made repairing this relationship his personal mission.

Whether any of it can reach William is another question entirely. And the person best placed to answer that question is not a palace aide or a diplomatic back-channel. It is Kate.
